Welcome to Military Kids on the Move
MKM is a powerful tool for military-connected families who are moving to a new school district and a new permanent change of station (PCS).
The MKM tool takes information you and your child provide to create a free, personalized profile of your child. You can share this profile with your child’s new teachers so they can learn about what makes your child unique and about their life in a military family.
If you would like to participate in our current study please contact our District Liaison, Debby Gaffney.

Easing School Transitions for Military Families: The MKM Initiative
MKM was developed to respond to the unique challenges faced by military families. The initiative is a result of studies our research team conducted with military families and the school staff who play a vital role in supporting them.
A common concern raised in these studies was the challenge of seamlessly transitioning children from military families into new schools. Families felt that settling into a new school could be easier if teachers knew a little bit about what makes their child unique and how they could best support them.
We developed the MKM tool to make the transition to a new school more enjoyable for both parents and children and help new teachers get a jump start on getting to know your child. By dedicating just 30 to 45 minutes of your time, the MKM tool will help you create a personalized, printable, and shareable profile highlighting the things that make your child unique!
Take a look at a sample from another military-connected family. In this profile, Kendall describes his feelings about school like recess and his friends, what he liked about his old school, and his anxieties about changing schools. On the back side are places for the parents to provide information to the teacher.
“It was fun, especially the question and answer. I was surprised on some of my kid’s answers.“

“My child really enjoyed being able to choose the background and character before answering questions. Interactive made it feel like a game for him…”
