Now that you’ve completed MKM, you can share the MKM Profile with your child’s new teacher(s). Think of this profile, which was created by your family, for your family, as a convenient way to “introduce” your child to teachers and other staff at the new school. We at MKM believe newly arriving students will experience greater support from when they are “introduced” to teachers in this way.
There are many ways to share the Profile with your child’s new teacher. Emailing the Profile as a PDF attachment is likely to be easiest if you can find the teacher’s email address. Some parents will prefer to hand the profile directly to the teacher when they first visit the school; others might ask their child to hand-carry the profile to their new teacher. Still other parents might do all three and even share a copy with the school counselor or principal.
Because MKM is new, your child’s teacher will not be familiar with the MKM Profile and could beconfused about your reasons for sending it. We suggest using language such as the following:
My family and I are new to the community, and my child [name] will be a student inyour class. I want to introduce my child to you, so you can help [child’s name] feel accepted and welcomed at school.
To help with our move, our family created a profile using a new program called Military Kids on the Move or MKM for short [link to MKM website]. MKM creates profiles that parents can share with teachers. The profile has lots of good information, and it’s all on one sheet: One side has information from parents and the other side has information from kids.
Some parents might choose to include a photo of their child with the MKM Profile, either as a digital file attached to an email or a printed picture. We like the idea of teachers having a picture of newly arriving military-connected students, but we understand that not all parents are comfortable doing that.
